Learning Intentions:
To listen, respond and make up their own rhymes (CLL).
To read a range of familiar and common words (CLL).
To look closely at similarities, differences, patterns and change (KUW).
To ask questions about why things happen and how things work (KUW).
To select tools and techniques they need to shape, assemble and join materials they are using (KUW).

Activity One:
You will need:
IWB or data projector and screen, internet access, kaleidoscope.
Ask the children what they think they will be able to see in the kaleidoscope. Encourage them to describe the colours, patterns and shapes that they can see. Compare this with the online kaleidoscope where children can explore changing the shapes and colours on the screen.

Activity two:
You will need: IWB or data projector and screen, internet access, star writer.
Use star writer to recognise and read reception high frequency words. (star writer)

Activity One:
You will need:
simple paint program.
Use the line tool to draw the sides of a star. How many different colours and line thicknesses can you use? How many stars have you drawn?

Activity Two:
You will need:
IWB, musical instruments.
Say the rhyme ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star' and add sounds to the rhyme using musical instruments. Create your own rhymes '10 twinkling stars shining in the sky, 10 twinkling stars shining in the sky, and if 1 twinkling star should float down to the earth….' to the tune of 10 green bottles.

Activity One:
You will need:
coloured card or paper, collage materials, glitter, sequins, scissors, glue.
Use different materials to create a collage star. What materials did you use? Why did you choose them? How did you join the materials?

Activity Two:
You will need:
mirrors, coloured spatulatas, junk modelling materials, coloured cellophane, acetate, sequins, glitter, beads, scissors, glue, sellotape, masking tape.
Create your own kaleidoscope. What patterns can you make? Why did you use sequins? What changes would you make? (tasc)

Role play opportunities: Astronaut, space journey.

Outdoor area opportunities: Draw shapes and patterns on the playground using chalk.
Use a digital camera to take digital photographs of shapes and patterns in the environmen
t.

What shapes and patterns can you see in the kaleidoscope?
What is the same or different about the kaleidoscope and the kaleidoscope on the screen?
What materials did you use to make your kaleidoscope?
How did you change the thickness of the line?
How did you join the lines to make the shape?
How is the star on the screen the same or different to the one you drew in the playground?
Why did you choose the materials in your collage?
How does your collage make you feel?
