Making Clicker grids - 7

Copying a pattern
This grid sends a pattern of words to Clicker Writer for the children to match.

When the Pattern 1 and Pattern 2 cells are clicked, the grid sends a series of words to Clicker Writer. The pattern of words can also be spoken by Clicker to help the children read it. The children then try to copy the pattern by clicking the picture cells. They write their name at the end by clicking their table colour.

How to create this grid yourself

Create the blank grid and insert the pictures (for help, see previous pages).

Type the name of each pattern into the chosen cells by holding the shift key and clicking the left mouse button. To make the cell send a pattern of words, point to the cell, hold down the shift key and click the right mouse button. The Cell Properties dialogue box will appear. Click the 'Send' tab.

Click in the 'Send text' button and then type the pattern of words you want to appear when the cell is clicked.

If you want to start a new line in the text that is being sent, click the 'Return [Enter]' button.

Putting a tick in the 'Add Return' box will make Clicker start a new line after the pattern of words has been sent. This will allow the children to write directly underneath the pattern.

Adding a spoken message to a cell

You can make a cell speak a message when it is clicked. This can be used to give the children instructions before they try a task. In the example above the pattern cells could speak the patterns.

Shift-right-click the cell. The Cell Properties dialogue box will appear. Click the 'Sound & Video' tab.

There are two ways to add sound to a cell. You can select 'Software Speech' which will make the computer speak the words you choose. Alternatively, you can record a voice message.

If you choose software speech, simply type the words into the long white box. Adding commas and full stops will insert pauses into the speech.

If you have a microphone attached to your computer you can record by clicking the 'Record' button. Speak the message and then click 'STOP'. Clicker will save the sound file in the same folder as the grid.

Save your grid when finished.
