Primary Control Technology.

Using Flowol in the primary classroom.

Control Technology seeks to enable young children to understand how devices attached to a computer can be programmed to perform simple functions. Using the commands listed below, all children at Key Stage 2 can write simple procedures to turn on and off lights, buzzers and motors, and use a switch to control when and how frequently such events will occur.

The Oval Start or Stop box

A Flow Line is used to link
  "on screen" commands.

The parallelogram represents
An input or output.
The rectangle represents
  an operation to be performed.

The Diamond represents when a decision in a
program is performed.

The activity sheets on the following pages are a simple introduction to the world of Control Technology using Flowol. Intended for the beginner, these sheets simply illustrate how the hardware and software can be used to enable children to:

  • Write a sequence of instructions to control one or more output devices.
  • Understand that a simple input device can control a planned event.
  • Write a simple procedure containing the commands "if" and "then" to control a device and enable a planned event to occur (i.e. switching a light bulb or buzzer on and off.)
