Introducing the Roamer sensors

Louise Symons, Sheldwich Primary School

Note for teachers
I started with a class lesson to introduce the sensors. Humans have five senses to help them as they travel about. Do the children know what these are? The touch, light, and sound sensor simulate three of our senses. Can we help the Roamer to use its sensors to move about safely?

Before using the Roamer, my class found it helpful to try moving around the room as if they were the Roamer with a sensor attached. They carried out specific instructions when they bumped into something, when the light was switched on, or when someone clapped. This helped them a lot when they tried to write procedures for the Roamer to use.

The sensors are connected to the yellow and green terminals at one end of the control box. The sound and light sensors also need to be connected to the orange terminal. Match the coloured wires to the terminals. Black wires can be connected either way round.

Connect the push sensor to the yellow and green terminals at one end of the control box. Use a suction pad to fix it to the Roamer's shell. Follow these three steps:

1. Tell the Roamer what to do when it receives a signal from the sensor.
For this you need to write a procedure. If this is the first procedure to be entered into the Roamer's memory, call it Procedure 1. Enclose your instructions to the Roamer in brackets. Have a look at this procedure. Can you work out what I want the Roamer to do when it receives a signal from the sensor?

2. Command the Roamer to act on a signal from the sensor.
Press S to tell the Roamer that there is a sensor attached. Tell it what type of change to detect. I have used 1, which stands for a low to high change. Then give the number of the procedure it must follow when the sensor sends a signal.

3. Tell the Roamer what to do as its main activity.
The Roamer will go on its journey, but it will stop and do the Sense Procedure when it receives a signal from the sensor. Here's the whole program. Can you predict what will happen?
