This section of our website has been put together to help you find your way round the BECTA Self Review Framework for ICT.

Becta SRF websiteWhat is the BECTA Self Review Framework for ICT?

The BECTA Self Review Framework for ICT is an online tool that allows schools to review their own progress in ICT within a manageable structure of eight defined elements that cover every aspect of ICT across the school. It can help guide your school through all the complex and challenging aspects of ICT that a modern school experiences. The Framework offers benchmarking against best practice and ensures that the school’s infrastructure meets needs now and in the future.

Once the Framework is completed you will be able to print out some recommended actions which can feed in to the Self Evaluation Form and development plan. It is our very strong recommendation that school leadership is involved from the start.

The Structure of the BECTA Self Review Framework

The framework encourages schools to assess their ICT performance in eight areas:

Eight Elements

  1. Leadership and management
  2. Curriculum
  3. Learning and teaching
  4. Assessment
  5. Professional development
  6. Extending opportunities for learning
  7. Resources
  8. Impact on pupil outcomes

(Click here to find out more about each Element)

Within each element are strands;

e.g.

(Click here to see the other strands)

In each strand there are aspects;

e.g. 1a Vision for ICT

  • 1a-1 The Vision
  • 1a-2 Development and Ownership of the Vision
  • 1a-3 Reviewing the Vision

Each aspect has five developmental increments;

It is important to complete the Becta Self Review Framework online so it can be easily updated and other features of the tool can be used. However, for working with other staff in developing ICT use, it is useful to print the elements.

Learning Environment Toolkit

To support Kent schools in self-review and action planning, we put together the Kent Learning Environment online toolkit, which is structured under the eight elements of the Becta Self Review Framework.

This online toolkit is designed to help schools evaluate ICT and plan for improvements in teaching and learning.

The SRF offers benchmarking against best practice and generates an action plan. The recommended actions may be edited and prioritised. Statements may feed in to the SEF and School Plan.

ICT MarkThe ICT Mark

The quality mark for ICT in schools was introduced in April 2006 to replace the NAACEmark. It identifies schools which are consistently able to demonstrate commitment to using technology to improve their overall effectiveness and efficiency.

Schools may use the Becta Self Review Framework to judge readiness for accreditation. The threshold is clearly shown in each section by the ICT Mark symbol:  ICT Mark

If a school achieves appropriate levels in each of the eight areas, it may apply to be assessed. Successful schools are awarded the ICT Mark.

Why should schools use the SRF?
