The way you access your self-review framework changed in July 2008. Now only one account will exist per school. This streamlines your self-review evaluation by ensuring that there are no duplicate accounts for your school and allowing collaborative working on a single account. The framework itself has not changed, only the interface to the framework.

Our Guide to the Self-Review Framework

This section of our website has been put together to help you find your way round the Becta self-review framework for ICT. The self-review framework is being used by more than half of all schools nationally to gauge where they are now and decide what they need to do to become an e-mature school.

Completing the self-review framework also enables schools to work towards gaining the ICT Mark, although this is not obligatory. The ICT Mark is the national accreditation for schools achieving high standards in their use of technology. In August 2008, Becta announced the 1,000th award.

What is the BECTA Self Review Framework for ICT?

The Becta Self Review Framework for ICT is an online tool that allows schools to:

• assess and improve their use of ICT
• see what "good" use of ICT looks like
• benchmark their progress against other schools
• identify strengths
• see suggested actions for improvement.

Once the Framework is completed you will be able to print out some recommended actions which can feed in to the Self Evaluation Form (SEF) and school development plan. It is our very strong recommendation that school leadership is involved from the start.

The Structure of the BECTA Self Review Framework

The framework encourages schools to assess their ICT performance in eight areas:

Each aspect has five developmental increments against which you assess your school:

You are making an assessment of your journey towards becoming an e-mature school.

It is important to complete the Becta self-review framework online so it can be easily updated and other features of the tool can be used.

To support Kent schools in self-review and action planning, we put together the Kent Learning Environment online toolkit, which is structured under the eight elements of the Becta Self Review Framework. This online toolkit is designed to help schools evaluate ICT and plan for improvements in teaching and learning. The SRF offers benchmarking against best practice and generates an action plan. The recommended actions may be edited and prioritised. Statements may feed in to the SEF and School Plan.

The ICT Mark

The ICT Mark is a nationally recognised accreditation scheme which gives schools recognition for their achievements in reaching a standard of maturity in their use of technology.

Schools must complete the Becta self-review framework before applying for ICT Mark assessment but when ready complete an online application form. (The threshold is clearly shown on the self-review in each section by the ICT Mark symbol: 

To reduce the financial burden to schools undertaking ICT Mark assessment and accreditation, KCC have agreed to subsidise the fees payable as follows:

Schools are strongly encouraged to contact ICT Consultants within the Advisory Service Kent before applying for ICT Mark assessment to ensure they are fully prepared for assessment.
