The Pixie in a Reception Classroom

Introducing movement on a grid

We have also made some lucky dip cards to see where the bus and passengers should start. In this way, we develop the ideas of counting on and counting back further as we explore addition and subtraction in a practical scenario. I have also drawn a 6 x 6 grid in permanent marker pen on the underside of a piece of transparent perspex. This is designed to fit over a second piece of perspex. The theory is that we can sandwich a treasure island map between them, or place objects to collect on the grid. We may also make an obstacle course and introduce the notion of turning.

With whiteboard marker pens, we will be able to plot a path to follow, draw it and try to key it in as a program.

Swallow do actually make a baseboard play area with a grid marked with 2D shapes. We decided against purchasing as we felt we could make our own baseboard and add the shapes to our perspex grid.

Pixie can be purchased from
Swallow Systems for £136.00 plus £9.90 P&P plus VAT (includes charger, manuals etc.)
