Revitalising databases and spreadsheets at KS2
A chance to find out how databases and spreadsheets can be used simply, but effectively, with pupils for data collection and problem solving, across the curriculum.
Keystage:
Key Stage 2
TARGET PERSONNEL:
Teachers who would like a chance to learn, or refresh their knowledge of, how to use spreadsheets and databases with pupils.
COURSE AIMS:
To breath fresh life into 'traditional' data handling projects.
To explore the potential of a multi-user database.
To develop the use of spreadsheets in mathematical problem solving.
To explore applications of data handling across the curriculum. |
COURSE OUTLINE:
- 2Calculate offers an enticingly simple way for pupils to explore the power of the computer to generate patterns and create number challenges.
- Spreadsheet modelling with Excel enables pupils to explore authentic problems in a mathematical rich environment.
- A fresh approach to the old QCA units will draw on contexts in science and geography.
- The Textease CT multi-user database transforms the process of creating a database and adding records. The single canvas of Textease CT enables data handling to be combined with vector drawing, writing and multimedia presentation.
- Online archives enable pupils to use existing source material, such as 19th century census data, in an investigation of their locality.

COURSE BENEFITS:
Delegates will be able to use 2Calculate, Excel and Textease CT to explore mathematical challenges with their pupils, and develop learners' use of ICT as a tool for investigation.
They will also be able to identify cross-curricular contexts and plan engaging, purposeful investigations drawing on pupils' own data collection, and online sources. |
OTHER INFORMATION:
Delegates should bring along a USB memory stick to collect resources they have created.
