Mindmapping and Web Quests

An introduction to mind mapping, and the use of concept mapping software both as a teaching tool, and to support the planning and written work of their pupils. Web quests provide a guided path for researching and reporting from the Internet on a variety of topics.

TARGET PERSONNEL:
Teachers who would like to explore the use of concept mapping software as a way to support writers, and make use of web quests as a more efficient way of gathering information from the Internet.
COURSE AIMS:
  • To support the teacher in the use of 2Connect, as a way to help learners categorise and organise ideas, and information, in a visual format.
  • To assist the teacher in modelling a range of learning tasks.
  • The process supports pupils in recording and using their research findings from the Internet.
  • Web quests may also be designed to promote collaborative group working.
COURSE OUTLINE:
  • Features will include the creation of flow charts with key ideas and attached sound and note files, as a way to scaffold writing. Using the concept map as a presentation or planning tool, and for generating more extensive writing.
  • Web quests direct pupils to specific sites for research. Mind mapping software can be used to organise the original web links, and for collecting and organising the results of the research.
  • Teachers will be able to explore existing web quests , and have the opportunity to create their own on different available software.
COURSE BENEFITS:
Teachers will become familiar with software and techniques that work equally well on the interactive whiteboard, or on individual computers.
