Year 1 Numeracy Diary; Properties of 2D Shapes

Learning Outcomes;
Use everyday language to name, sort and describe familiar 2-D shapes.
Context of work.
This lesson occurred towards the end of a unit of work investigating the properties of 2d shapes. The lesson began with an oral starter. Then the whole class sat around a large monitor to begin the main teaching activity.
Main Teaching Activity

Using the 2-D Shape Powerpoint presentation pupils were encouraged to read each statement as it appeared on screen. As more information was given, pupils were asked to predict which shape was being described. This activity led to interesting discussions especially when children were justifying their predictions as each new property appeared on screen. A pupil was then chosen to click on screen to reveal the shape to the class. Shapes investigated included circle, triangle, square and rectangle.

Pupil Activities

One group of children worked on the computers using a Textease screen where simple shape sentences had to be selected and dragged to the appropriate shape.

Another group of children matched the sentences to the shapes used in the Powerpoint presentation. The Powerpoint screens were printed, the sentences cut into strips and the shape picture cut out separately. The sentences for each shape were muddled and then each group had to sort the correct sentence to the correct shape.

Year 2 Numeracy Diary; Digital Time

Learning Outcomes;
Read the time to the half or quarter hour on a digital clock.
Main Teaching Activity

The children sat on the carpet looking at the large monitor. The children had cards with the time written on them for example: three o'clock and quarter past four. Each child read out their card and made the time on an analogue clock at the front. We talked about telling the time using a digital clock and recorded the number of hours on the digital clock with a child selecting the hour by double clicking on the number and dragging it to the correct place on the screen. We counted in 5s (small cards with 0, 5, 10… were blu-tacked around the outside edge of the clock) using the analogue clock to find out how many minutes we had and again asked a child to select the minutes 00, 15, 30 and 45 by double clicking and dragging it to the correct place on the digital clock. We then read the time on the analogue and digital clock aloud together.

Pupil Activities

1: ICT activity: recording digital time using textease file (Differentiated: o'clock and half past, extend to include quarter past and quarter to).

2: Printing out screen, enlarging on photocopier; laminating digital clock image and cutting out hours and minutes. Children worked with LSA using time cards and analogue clock to record digital time on individual clocks. Checked answers in pairs and read analogue and digital time aloud together (Differentiated: o'clock and half past, extend to include quarter past and quarter to).

Year 2 Numeracy Diary; Money

Learning Outcomes;
To recognise and find simple totals of coins to £1.00
Main Teaching Activity

The children sat on the carpet looking at the large monitor. We turned cards to find the amount of money to be put in the purse for example: 23p, 46p, 52p. The children selected the coins that they needed by clicking and dragging them into the purse. We checked the answer by adding the coins in the purse.

We talked about exchanging coins and investigated different ways that we could make 50, 70p, 85p… We found different totals using the smallest amount of coins possible.

Plenary
The purse was used in the plenary to reinforce finding totals, giving change and investigating word problems.
