Sholden School World War 2 Day report by Rosie

Before assembly we looked at what people were wearing. We had all dressed up for as evacuees the World War 2 day. We had assembly then went back to class. Mr Bracegirdle took some of us to the main building and we did some writing about World War 2.

After Break

We had another man come into our class called Mr Coulson. He showed us what food people had during World War 2 and why they had so little. He said the Germans shot the ships that had food in them so they didn't have much food.
Mr Coulson showed us a bell, a helmet and lots of other artefacts.

After Lunch

We had a talk with real evacuees and asked them lots of questions about being evacuated. We were able to talk to them using our webcam and flash-meeting.
After that Mr Coulson and Miss McDowell helped us make our gas masks. We had to draw around a template then cut it out then make a cylinder, then stick it to the mask.

I have learnt ......

Not all people are lucky and they barely had any food during WW2.
The lady we interviewed said that one of her dogs got shot because it ate her next door neighbours' chickens.
Another evacuee's Dad got taken away as prisoner by the Russians but thankfully he came back. She was German so she was the Germans side in the war. After the war, this lady married an English soldier and came to live in England with him and his family.
Another evacuee said that the best part about being evacuated is that you get to go to somewhere you've never been before and also said it was like going on an adventure.
