Unit 1D: Lesson 1 I can use words to describe a fruit or vegetable. I can choose a fruit or vegetable when someone describes it in words. Introduction (10 minutes) Set the scene by asking children to look at a selection of fruit and vegetables which they have previously explored. Ask them to suggest words to describe one item so that other children can identify it. Make them aware that key words can identify a particular fruit or vegetable. Examples are: yellow, green, large, soft, round, prickly … Main lesson (15 minutes) Show the class ready-made labels (from Clicker) with key words. Show how the labels may be used to describe a piece of fruit or vegetable. This will work best if the teacher links back to children's practical experience of handling the fruit and vegetables. As each item is identified, ask children to list the words then say them in a sentence. Example: "Small, sweet, soft, red. It is a small, sweet, soft, red strawberry." Plenary (5 minutes) Ask children to suggest words to describe the shape, colour, smell, feel and taste of the chosen fruit and vegetable. Download Clicker grids to make labels:
