Unit 1D: Lesson 3

I can choose an object from a set when someone describes it in words

Main lesson (20 minutes)

Use the display of real fruit and vegetables, pictures or digital images. Give the children two general properties and ask them to identify the fruit or vegetable. Repeat, and compare the words used to identify the two objects. For example, yellow and soft would identify the banana, but yellow and hard could be either the lemon or the pineapple. If we really mean the pineapple, which other word can we use?

Ask a child to think of a fruit or vegetable, then use two words to describe it. Ask the others to identify which one has been chosen. Ask the class why it may be easier to identify some fruit and vegetables than others. Discuss which properties are unique to a particular fruit or vegetable, and which are shared by more than one.

Plenary (10 minutes)

Record as two lists the shared and unique properties, e.g:
yellow prickly
soft sour
large bumpy
etc.
