Unit 1E: Lesson 1

I can make a pictogram from data

Introduction (10 minutes)

Use a collection of fruit and vegetables as part of D&T Unit 1C, Eat More Fruit and Vegetables. The start of this unit asks children to handle, examine and describe a range of fruit and vegetables through talking, labelling and classifying. Time will need to be made before the ICT lesson for this activity. You may link with ICT Unit 1D to make labels to describe items of fruit and vegetables.

Ask children to look at the range of fruit and vegetables and suggest ways of classifying them.

Main lesson (15 minutes)

Give children printed pictures of their chosen fruit or vegetable. Clicker has a bank of pictures to use, and Textease has high quality clip art. For a large collection of clip art to use in Word, go to Microsoft Clipart on line.

Ask children to create a pictogram based on one of their suggested ways of classifying the fruit or vegetables, for example:

colour (green, yellow, orange...)
texture (juicy, soft, crunchy...)
taste (sweet, sharp, bitter...)

Use the pictogram to answer questions:

Which is the commonest colour of the fruits in our collection?
Do more fruits taste sweet than sharp?

Another pictogram may be made by asking the class which is their favourite. You will need plenty of copies of the pictures, or children may draw their own.

Plenary (5 minutes)

Compare answering questions using a pictogram with answering the same questions from the display of fruit and vegetables.
