Unit 1E: Lesson 2

I can use ICT to make a pictogram

Introduction (15 minutes)

Recap making a pictogram from pictures. Create a class tally chart of the colours of fruit and vegetables in the display. Demonstrate how to enter data into a table.

Explain that the aim is to create an ICT version of the previous pictogram. Make the link between the icons on the screen and the pictures used in the previous lesson. Show how to enter the data into the table and see how the pictogram is created

Main lesson (15 minutes)

Children use a simple graphing program to record the colours of fruit or vegetables and create a pictogram.

If children are working in pairs remind about taking turns. One child types and the other checks the data is correct.

Give children a time limit of 15 minutes and provide questions to be answered as an extension task. Which is the most common colour of fruit/ vegetable? Which is the least common colour of fruit/vegetable?

Plenary (5 minutes)

Answer simple questions using the pictogram.
Explore with the children whether the pictogram would be the same if we used different fruit and vegetables.
Discuss the advantages of using ICT .
