Unit 1E: Lesson 3

Integrated task:

I can collect data and make it into a pictogram to help me answer questions

Data could be used from the following units to create many opportunities for children to create pictograms on the computer:

D&T Unit 1B Playgrounds - most/least popular item in the playground
D&T Unit 1D Houses and Homes - different types of home, building materials used
Science 1A Ourselves - key characteristics of children's eye and hair colour
Science Unit 1C - Sorting and using materials
Geography Unit 1 Around our School - How children travel to school
Geography Unit 2 How can we make our local area safe - traffic survey

These cross-curricular links provide opportunities at different times of the year for children to create pictograms on the computer. If you have an ICT suite, pupils can practise their skills and write a simple report on what the pictogram shows. In the classroom, groups can create pictograms at different times, and all can share in answering questions in the plenary.

Introduction (10 minutes)

Remind children how to sort the data they have collected and make a simple tally chart. The data may have been recorded in an earlier lesson. For example, a tally of house types may have been made on a walk around the local area.

Remind children how to put the data into the graphing program.
Demonstrate the process.
Discuss with the children the questions to be answered.

Main lesson (15 minutes)

Children use their recorded data on a tally chart. They enter their data into the graphing program to create a pictogram.
Children answer questions and write the answers on their graph - by hand after printing, or word-processed.

Plenary (5 minutes)

Draw together the advantages of using ICT

Information easier to see
Questions can be answered more easily
It can be much quicker.
