An introduction to modelling

In this unit pupils learn that a computer can be used to represent real or fantasy situations. They understand that the representation is not an exact replica of the original. They discuss the main differences and similarities between a representation and the original. They create their own representations of real or fantasy situations. Pupils should be able to apply what they have learnt in this unit when exploring adventure programs or simulations.

Dressing the Teddy (My World Screen)
Show children the screen for dressing the teddy. Ask children if they would put the clothes on the computer teddy in the same manner as they would dress a real teddy. Demonstrate the difficulties in dressing a real teddy, e.g. how the clothes have to be fitted over legs and arms. Compare this with dressing the teddy on screen where clothes can be positioned easily.

Pictures
Show the children how a simple painting program can be used to create a visual representation e.g. a favourite toy. Children could experiment and create their own representations.

Create a Picture (Light and Dark - Science Link)
Children create their own representation of light sources links, for example to Bonfire Night or Diwali.

Create a picture (Playgrounds - Design and Technology)
Demonstrate how stamps/motifs or clip art can be used to create more complex representations e.g. a playground scene. Children could experiment and create their own representations.

Draw a House (Homes - History link)
Children use a simple painting program to create a picture of their house or another house from the area around the school.

Postcards (Seaside - History or Geography link)
Children use a painting program to create a seaside scene
