The information around us

In this unit pupils learn that information exists in a variety of forms, including text, still and moving pictures, charts and sounds and that different media are used for different purposes. They learn that ICT can be used to communicate and handle information in a variety of ways. Pupils should be able to apply what they have learned in this unit when they are looking for and presenting information.

Teaching Activities

The aim of this unit is to familiarise children with different types of information which they may use when finding out about an area of interest. The use of ICT will be more purposeful if this unit is linked to another subject context. A good example is D&T Unit 1D Homes. In these lessons, links are also made to Science Unit 1A Ourselves.

Setting the scene:
Talk with the children about where they may be able to find about homes. Digital photos, estate agents' web sites and leaflets, books and a local survey can tell us about different homes. We could ask questions, or look at a TV programme or video. A reference book or CD ROM will also give us information about animal homes. Children need to be aware of how we can listen to and record sounds, and what information pictures give us.
