In this unit pupils learn that key pieces of information can be used to describe objects. They also learn to use simple criteria to divide groups of objects into sub-sets, and to identify objects by key words. They will use a word processor with a word bank to present information. This unit could be taught in reception. Pupils will apply what they have learnt in this unit when sorting objects in mathematics and science.

In these lessons, ICT 1D is taught in the context of D&T 1C: Eat More Fruit and Vegetables. Linking with other subjects gives opportunities for repeated practice of skills, enabling support for children who find writing difficult. The unit may alternatively be linked to any of the following units where children gain experience of sorting, labelling and classifying:
