Writing stories: communicating information using text

In this unit pupils learn to use words to communicate messages and recognise that ICT lets them correct and improve their work, as they are working or at a later date. Pupils will also have opportunities to discuss their experiences of using ICT. They will be able to apply what they have learnt in this unit when: writing stories with a clear sequence of events in a sustained style; using and punctuating a range of sentence types; commenting on the features which distinguish texts such as narrative, information and poetry. They will also be able to use these skills when: producing creative writing in English; producing accounts of their work in science and geography; describing sequences of events in history.

Teaching Activities

Textease idea - Jack and the Beanstalk

Stretton Primary Year 2 pupils acted out the story of Jack and the Beanstalk using freeze framing. They took it in turns to take photographs. They then dragged the folder of photographs into Textease presenter and added speech bubbles. (A text box f7 was added to each bubble to make it easier for the children to add text.)

Demonstrate to the class how to use the space bar to create a space, and how to use the shift key to make a capital letter. Give the children an opportunity to write a simple sentence and ask them to type the sentence.

Teacher Sheet

Show a poem on the board with a repeated rhyme as a piece of prose with no line breaks. Discuss the difference between the way poetry and prose are presented and demonstrate how to use the Return/Enter key to make line breaks. Organise the class into pairs and ask them to insert line breaks in the poem. Print out the children's work and compare it with the original.

Children's Sheet (Humpty)

Children's Sheet (Shopping)

Print out a set of pictures with empty speech bubbles. Discuss how speech bubbles can be used to illustrate direct speech. Remind the class how to enter text and demonstrate the use of the shift key. Ask the children to discuss what the speaker may be saying, and use the word processor to type the speech.

Teacher Sheet

Children's Sheet

Show an extract from a familiar children's book with the full stops replaced with the word 'and'. Discuss the extract with the class and explain that the repeated use of 'and' makes it repetitive and difficult to read. Demonstrate how to delete an 'and', insert a full stop and change the following letter to upper case. Ask the children to edit the prepared text. Ask them to print out their work and compare it with the original version.
