Introduction to databases

In this unit pupils learn to collect and store information involving more than two variables. They will use a database to answer simple questions by sorting and finding the top or bottom and searching in a single field. They will be introduced to files, records and fields by exploring and comparing computer-based data and paper-based information. They will use a computer database, add to it, carry out simple searches and produce bar charts. Pupils will apply what they have learnt in this unit when using ICT to handle and present information in geography, science, design and technology, and history.

The Case of the Vanishing Sandwich
"The Mystery of the Vanishing Sandwich" sees Paddington Bear become the victim of a crime. Pupils have to carry out sorting activities at and away from the computer to help the local police find the culprit. Clues to the criminal's identity are hidden within the story and by carrying out (a) a conventional sort using picture cards (b) a sort using a branching database (c) a sort using a spreadsheet, the children are able to "sort out" and pinpoint the culprit.

The above lesson links to Science Unit 3A - teeth and eating, but may be taught independently. It uses a very simple prepared database in order for children to input data quickly, as this is not the main focus of the lesson.
Searching a database for information on holiday weather
This work through three lessons links to Geography Unit 7 Weather around the world. It may be taught alongside, or integrated to address the enquiry question about holiday destinations: “What will the weather be like? How will it affect what we do?”
Suggested Cross Curricular Activities
Children could create a database on materials, rocks, kitchen equipment, or minibeasts
e.g. Science 3C Materials and 3D Rocks and Soils
As part of their geography topic on the weather, the children could add information to a prepared database on different holiday destinations.
