Analysing data and asking questions: using complex searches |
In this unit pupils learn to use prepared databases to answer questions which rely on more than one variable. They will present data in graphical form, print out their graphs and use them to help them answer questions relating to the data. pupils will be able to build on what they have learnt in this unit when: investigating possible relationships between data in history, geography, science and mathematics; undertaking investigations that rely on more data than they are able to collect for themselves, for example when searching for information on the World Wide Web.

Data handling with Information Workshop Case study by St Mary's Primary School
This report demonstrates ways in which Information Workshop can be used to undertake database activities at Key Stage 2.
Olympics - Data Handling Project (Maths)
The project took place during the 2000 Olympics fortnight. Details of past winners were taken from the database of track and field events, published by the Centre for Innovation in Mathematics Teaching at Exeter University. The data was entered into a spreadsheet, then graphed to show trends in performance over the years. Graphs were also used to predict this year's results.

Planning a school trip
This activity builds on searching and sorting skills already addressed in the previous mini beasts activity in Year 3.

Weather around the World (Geography)
Shapes (Mathematics)
Pupils create 2D shapes on a grid or geoboard. The shapes are given imaginary names. The teacher sets up the database, with fields representing attributes of the shapes. A record for each shape, giving its properties, is entered into the file. The only way of locating a shape is by searching for its properties. Later, the file may be used to test ideas such as ‘Do all shapes with four sides tessellate?’
