The River Watch Activity Pack

Soundscape
Recording the river sounds and writing poetry

Key objective:

To listen and record the sounds of the river

Equipment needed

  • MP3 or sound recorder
  • Paper and pencil

The students will need to listen with eyes closed for a minute to the sounds of the river. Tell them before they close their eyes that they will be writing down nouns, verbs and adjectives afterwards (you may wish to tell them that they will be just writing down some of the things that they hear). After they have listened they write five nouns down, they get them to write down five adjectives and finally five verbs.

After this use the words to write a poem built up simply line by line. Only allow a few minutes to do this, ten minutes should be fine.

Example of poems about rivers

Problems

There may be technical issues with using the equipment

Why are we doing this?

To develop literacy and explore the key words around the rivers; to encourage and develop the children’s listening skills
