ICT Link Unit 2B To select and use different techniques to communicate ideas through pictures
Collect examples of designers who used nature as a source of ideas, eg William Morris, and designs based on natural forms, animals and birds, eg Arabic carpet designs, Polynesian fabrics.

Use a display of natural objects created in the art and design lessons. Ask the children to examine these, using a viewfinder to select a small area. They take this as a starting point for their own design on the computer, using a variety of drawing and painting tools. The children might draw and fill in the shapes they have identified in their observational drawings.

The children print their work, discuss their designs and give reasons for choosing the particular tools. They describe the effects produced.

Learning Outcomes

  • select the appropriate tools to give the required effect

Use an object-based graphics package to create a range of geometric shapes similar to those in 'The Snail' by Matisse. Demonstrate to the class how these shapes can be selected and rearranged, how colours can be changed, how shapes can be resized and how shapes can be copied and layered.
