Progressive
By whatever route, all children need to reach this phase in understanding the use of drawing for design. This is the point at which they realise that they can progress their ideas through drawing. They try several related ideas, different styles or decorations, choose the best or favourite and develop a product based on this choice. A clear thought path can be traced through the drawings and on to the product.
Year 2:
Uniquely amongst all the children who took part in "Flat Stan" this year, this boy decided to make the figure into a pop-up figure using a straw for a stick which was to fit inside the envelope. Not realising his intentions, I prevented him from cutting a hole in the envelope. I have photographed his figure as he intended it to be, peeping out of the top of the envelope. |

Year 4:
This girl has begun with the idea of Stan being dressed in his football kit, but changes her mind about the styling of the shorts. So she redraws the figure with the new shorts styling. I like her confidence in graphical representation to draw the boots detatched from the body, with a pen stroke to indicate their obvious intended placement. In her second drawing she does not bother with the feet. She is happy with the boots already drawn. |
