Key areas for ICT in Geography
2. Gaining access to a wider range of geographical knowledge and information

E-mail can provide an excellent source of information from other localities. Schools can become involved in e-mail exchange projects with other schools in the UK or across the world. If images and sound are captured digitally (for example using a digital video camera) then this type of information can be attached to e-mails and shared with others.

Tape recorders and video cameras can be used to record the sights and sounds of an area. This information can be brought back to the classroom and used again and again.

The Internet is a rich source of information. Children can access texts, photographs, video and sounds from localities across the globe. Many web sites have been created that are useful in geography lessons.

Web enquiries are being created where children are directed to a page of geographical questions which includes a set of links to web sites where the answers may be found. Some examples are:

Safe search engines allow children to search for information on the Internet. These examples will only search pages that are suitable for children.

These resources may help children locate geographical information including:

  • statistical information such as population or climate data
  • answers to specific questions such as 'What is the largest city in India?'
  • geographical investigations such as 'Will it flood where I live?'
  • current affairs issues not yet in reference books e.g. 'Has foot and mouth
  • affected my area?'
  • information about a specific locality e.g. 'What are the main tourist
  • attractions in Canterbury?'

Teachers can use general search engines to help in their research during preparation for lessons. Some examples are:
