Key areas for ICT in Geography
4. Experiencing images of people, places and environments

Web Cams l The Internet l Digital Photography l Videos

webcam Web Cams

Web Cams on the Internet provide a way to view live images of localities around the globe. Children can see an image that will be almost live and can consider issues such as weather conditions, time differences and land use. Although not all web cams update their image second by second, there are often galleries of previously recorded photographs to browse.

Internet

Websites from around the world are available on the Internet. Many of them contain images and photographs that can be used in Geography. Up to the minute satellite weather images and virtual reality panoramas of an area are just two examples of the huge range of information available on the World Wide Web.

Children can use web pages from distant localities as a secondary source of information in a huge range of contexts, although the Iinternet should not replace the use of 'real' maps and first hand investigations of localities. The table below suggests areas in the QCA Scheme of Work for Geography where Internet images may be helpful.

Images obtained from Web pages can be incorporated into children's work in a way traditional photographs cannot. Simply right-click an image on a web page and select Copy then switch to a word processor or other presentation software and click Paste. This enables children to annotate images and use them in interactive presentations.

Digital Photography

Digital Photography allows schools to exchange images with distant localities via e-mail. E-mail partnerships between schools in different countries are an excellent way to involve children in geographical investigations.

Video conferencing allows children to see and talk in real time to people around the world.

Videos on the Internet

ARKive - Images and videos of Life on Earth
The site contains videos and images of the world's bio diversity. Think of an organism, then use the search facility to find facts, movies and images about it. The materials could be used for pupil research, including habitat studies and learning how to use databases.
Although the materials are not copyright-free teachers may use them for 'internal educational use' - for example, in lesson plans, presentations, worksheets and projects.
