Key areas for ICT in Geography
5. Considering the wider impact of ICT on people, places and environments

Through their use of ICT in Geography, children should become increasingly aware of how ICT enables people to communicate effectively and share important information.

Children may also be encouraged to consider the impact ICT is having on the employment patterns of their locality.

Examples from BECTa are:

  • On a visit to the local high street, note the location of and take digital photographs recording the uses of technology and control systems, e.g. automatic doors, cash dispensers, bar code readers and pedestrian crossings.
  • Pupils visit a travel agent to plan a journey to Lagos, Nigeria. They are shown the on-line systems which enable the travel agent to select the most appropriate route, price and time for the journey, and also allow reservations and payment to be made by credit card.

Other ideas include:

  • Carry out a survey of parents to investigate how many people work at home using the Internet to communicate. (Seek parents' permission beforehand: how will you assure confidentiality?)
  • When visiting local supermarkets, investigate the use of ICT in checkout and stock control.
  • Compare the costs and time involved in sending a message in different formats, e.g. postal service, e-mail, fax, telephone.
  • Discuss the use of mobile telephones to communicate. This could be extended into studying the issues involved in the siting of mobile telephone masts.
