Email exchange with a partner school
To extend this topic into a comparative study with
another locality, you may decide to make contact with another school
in a contrasting location. The National Curriculum requires Key Stage
1 pupils to study a location, either in the United Kingdom or overseas,
with physical and/or human features which contrast with those in the
locality of the school. The chosen locality should be of similar size
to the pupils' own.
These are good examples of sites which may help
you get in touch with another school:
After a link has been established, information
about the two localities may be exchanged by e-mail.
Resources which may be e-mailed between schools
include:
- Children's writing saved in a word
processor.
- Digital photographs
saved in jpeg format.
- Links to a web site
that can generate a map of the locality.
- Scanned images
of children's drawings and maps, also saved injpeg
format.
- Video footage of the local area taken with a
digital video camera. This will
need to be saved in a standard digital video format such as .avi
or .mpeg.
Other ICT resources that may be exchanged by post
include:
Video footage
taken of the local area. Note, if you are sending a video tape, some countries, including the USA, have different
video systems.
Cassette tapes
of the children in each class. A good idea is to allow children to tape
record a number of geographical questions which can be posted to the
partner school. The children at that school may research and record
the answers and send the tape back.
