  • Focused observation using 4 maps of local area, differing ages and condition - identify the oldest.
  • Observe features, note symbols
  • Find the village of Doddington, find the school
  • Mixed age groups and ability - open discussion, group feedback for conclusions.

  • Y2/3 all children working individually, 2 using Local Studies on P.C.
  • Draw a map of the village, not to scale, featuring main roads, school, pub, Post Office, woodland, church
  • Introduce campsite theme - where would you place this? Why?

Data collection and recording activities

Devise a questionnaire and ask focused questions on the proposal to create a caravan/camp site in the village

  • Class discussion - experiences of campsites
  • Two able Y3s ask children for questions and choose best to include in survey
  • How do villagers feel about present facilities, how do they feel about the proposal, what would be the effect on the village?
  • Each child takes home a questionnaire (2 if desired).

  • Photos of main buildings in village

Interpretation and analysis of data

To begin to share knowledge and make judgements from survey returns

To begin to relate changes in their environment and their effect on people

  • Individual campsite brochures - discuss in groups (abilities) of information to be included
  • Facilities on offer, directions to campsite, entertainment, map of main route to campsite
  • Y3 (8 of more able) read surveys together, identify generalisations and common answers
  • Questionnaire returns
  • Pencils, paper and drawing implements

 

  • Y3 continued - children read all the returns, discuss each question, pick out key words, e.g. quietness, pollution, traffic
  • What is the reason for the common replies? - Identify how long person had lived in village, use made of facilities from young to old.

  • From the pros and cons of the survey - would the campsite go ahead?
  • Inquire with the local trades the effect on the premises, the village
