Context

This was an enquiry-based project on weather for year 5 over a half term, focusing on microclimates. In the long term planning, aspects of geographical skills are incorporated into the theme of weather.

The enquiry revolved around the need to site tables and chairs in the playground and school field, so enhancing enjoyment of playtimes. This was the last part of an environmental project financed by the Parent Teacher Friends Association which class 4 have designed, planned and help build. Incorporating a study of the school microclimate into the final stage of this environmental project gave the pupils a very real enquiry needing practical investigation. The pupils are particularly aware of the effects of the weather as the school is sited on the Old Saxon Shore overlooking the Romney Marsh.

Pupils find evidence of wind and rain weathering on bricks.
