Information and price lists on all OS maps and wall charts can be obtained from: Education Team, Ordnance Survey, Romsey Road, SOUTHAMPTON SO16 4GU Tel: (01703) 792960 Fax: (01703) 792039.

The National Map Centre, 22-24 Caxton Street, LONDON, SW1H OQU Tel: (0171) 222 2466 and Stanfords, listed under Globes.

Ordnance Survey now have many listed regional and local suppliers for large scale maps as well as smaller scale ones. Check their catalogue for your nearest supplier.

LEA schools can take photocopies of OS map extracts as the county has a special educational copyright license. These copies must be for pupil use, not for use in school publications such as the prospectus.

Geographic Information Services (GIS) at Kent County Council, Springfield, will provide laminated OS map photocopies at a cheap price compared to standard suppliers. This is the best value for money way to obtain these maps. Contact: Alan Lloyd 01622 221674.

A full range of OS products is also available through Experian Goad Ltd, as well as their own town centre plans. Goad plans are accurate plans of shopping centres and high streets. These plans show in detail the layout of the shops, the retailer and what they trade in. They are updated, some annually and others once every two years, so comparisons can be made of the shops now, when the plan was drawn and some number of years ago. It is possible to buy the copyright cheaply, which enables the buyer to reproduce parts of the plan for pupils’ worksheets. There is also a primary pack to help teachers develop work in shopping centres using the plans (for ages 7-11) - Education Pack A: Goad Shopping Centre Plans in Junior Schools.

Experian Goad also produces an excellent catalogue entitled Experian Goad Mapping Division: Education Information Pack which you can obtain free of charge. It gives clear information about a wide range of maps, atlases, globes, wall maps and CD-ROMs. Experian Goad Ltd, Goad House, 8-12 Salisbury Square, HATFIELD, Hertfordshire, AJ9 5BJ Tel: (01707) 636900 Fax: (01707) 636907.

Globes

Globes are either physical - showing land forms - or political - showing countries. They can be bought from many stationers, for example, W H Smith, High Street shops such as the Early Learning Centre, and through educational catalogues, for example Philips, Hestair Hope, E J Arnold.

Stanfords has an extensive globe catalogue:

Stanfords, 12-14 Long Acre, London WC2E 9LP Tel: (017l) 836 1321.

If you are buying a hard globe, it sometimes pays to buy one with a metal arm, as these last longer if children lean on them. Good quality globes are expensive; inflatable globes provide a viable and inexpensive alternative. They start at around £4, and can be bought from Chas. E Goad and Cambridge Publishing Services, PO Box 62, Cambridge, CB3 9NA.

Other equipment

Compasses, clinometers and weather-measuring instruments can be obtained through educational suppliers. For more specific help on weather studies, including weather forecast logging maps, contact:

Collect your own rocks and fossils. Commercial packs are available, for example Primary Core Pack (Key Stage 2) from:

Earth Works Geography Supplies Limited, 16 Station Road, Chapeltown, SHEFFIELD, S30 4XH Tel: (Ol14) 455746.
