B. European Resources

(Suitable for Key Stage 1)
These resource packs written about European Union localities, can still be used in this context. Most of them contain details about the region and country in which the place is situated. All can be used for relevant theme work.

1. European Locality Pack: France Wasquehal, near Lille Key Stage 2

    This pack is centred. on Wasquehal, a suburb of Lille, very close to Southborough's twin town (Southborough, suburb of Tunbridge Wells!) of Marq-en-Baroeul, also a suburb of Lille. It contains teachers' materials, plans, worksheets and a whole range of photos (30), some side view, some vertical aerial and some oblique aerial. It covers a range of themes - land use, settlement, environmental and is set in the wider context of France.

2. European Locality Pack: Germany Speyer on the Rhine Key Stage 2

    Another good pack on a similar basis as the above French one. Useful to fit with the Rivers themes at some stage. Both these packs could be usefully supplemented by real maps of the area bought separately in good bookshops or Stanfords, Long Acre, LONDON (near Covent Garden) and by tourist information obtained direct from the towns' tourist offices or the regional tourist offices.

3. Time and Place Geography: Resource Pack Lansac (France) Key Stage 2

    This is a very comprehensive pack based on a locality on the Aquitaine south western wine producing area of France. It includes high quality posters, 20 colour photographs, 2 Michelin maps, a vertical aerial view of the Dordogne/Garonne confluence, and a comprehensive teachers' guide with, of course, the inevitable photocopiable activity sheets. A real quality geography pack, but consequently expensive at about, £60. If you are a Bordeaux wine enthusiast it's fairly easy to supplement with wine labels, tourist information from the Bordelais, etc.

4. *Montreuil: A European Place Study France

    Produced with Key Stages 1 and 2 in mind, this in-depth investigation of Montreuil explores the small market town in the Nord/Pas de Calais region. It comprises of twenty seven A4 colour photocards, a teacher's book, research and activity sheets. 1995

5. Greece: Epidavros

    This small Greek fishing village can be studied through second hand enquiry. The pack contains several large colour posters, twenty A4 colour photos, large colour maps and a range of teacher and pupil resources. Often used when schools are studying Ancient Greece in the same year 1995.

6. Portrait of Europe - Landmarks BBC TV, 5 excellent programmes

Based respectively in Mediterranean Spain, the French Alps, a Geman Rhine town, Holland and Sweden. The themes of geography are well integrated into each place and can be picked up across the series. Teachers notes and photos can also be purchased.
