3. Where Camels are better than Cars: Douentza, Mali, West Africa

    Focuses on the lives of four people who each come from different cultural groups. Includes 34 colour photographs, a poster, plan of Douentza market, a teacher’s book and a pupil’s book.     A video has now been produced to accompany the pack, increasing the price to £25.00. The video uses video stills, a technique to which teachers and children can adjust successfully. The materials are very highly thought of by teachers who have used them to date.

4. The Thread of the Nile

    An activity pack which uses the Nile to explore four themes: linking Egypt past and present, using the Nile, farming choices and living in a community. 5. Kano - Discovering Aerial Photographs

6. Living and Learning in a Tanzanian Village: A Child’s Perspective Kirua, Tanzania

    Photo pack (black and white) and activities, using the case study of Kirua Primary School in Tanzania. Emphasis on enabling pupils to make links with their own school lives and locality. Goes a long way in showing how links can be made with a local study. Produced by Manchester Development Education Project. In spite of black and white photos, this is a good pack.1992.

7. Kapsokwony: Rural Kenya

    This pack provides a case study of a rural community in Kenya. 30 colour photos with teachers’ information books on Kenya and Kapsokwony and a range of other information sheets and resources. 8. Nairobi: Kenyan City Life

    One of the few packs focusing on an urban locality. The locality studied is a slum area on the outskirts of the city but much of the pack looks at central Nairobi and there are plenty of photos showing a modern, bustling city as well. 9. Palm Grove: Zambia

    Mixture of colour and black and white photos. Large poster with map of Africa and photos of ’Education in Zambia’. Teacher’s booklet useful for putting Zambia in economic and political context. Focuses on Families, School, Weather, Water, Food, Journeys, Tourism, Trade and Work. Produced by UNICEF UK. 10. Addokorpe Life in a Ghanaian Village

    Twenty eight good colour photos plus book of teacher’s notes with exercises (rather than activities) and maps. Information on homes and buildings, food, work, children, weather and links with other places. Produced by World Vision and Worldaware. 11. *Kaptalamwa: A Village in Kenya Maureen Weldon

Kaptalamwa, close to the equator and with an estimated population of 1500, forms the basis of this study of a distant locality in an economically developing country. The photopack contains:

Twenty eight full-colour A4 photographs.
Over 60 pages of notes, including 18 A4 activity sheets.
Numerous maps and black and white photographs of the area.

Information about the village, its customs and way of life, statistics on weather and climate, and background information on Kenya are also included. The activity sheets, specific to Key Stages 1 and 2, utilise resources both from the pack itself and elsewhere and form the basis of the studies. 12. Baricho - A Village in Kenya

    Case study of a village in central Kenya, specially selected and prepared to serve as an example of a locality in an economically developing country for Key Stage 2. Information and activities on the village and the life of an individual family, together with background on Kenya. 13. Kenya

    Resource pack which includes maps, photographs simple statistics and promotes artefact use. It can be used alongside the BBC School TV Zig Zag Unit on Kenya, or independently to support the study of an economically developing country. 14. The GAMBIA *Isatou, Chloe and You: A Comparative study of Three Children and Three Localities.

    This multi-media pack enables pupils to compare a family in a locality in the Gambia with a family in Marlborough in the UK. In addition pupils are asked to use their own life and locality to make comparisons also. The pack has developed from a long standing link between Marlborough and The Gambia. It includes, as well as 24 A4 colour photos, teachers’ information and notes, maps and worksheets and a sound tape relating to both localities. An optional but very worthwhile video can also be purchased.

    Bangalore - Indian City Life (listed as No 21 below) makes a good contrast to this pack ensuring that pupils don’t think all Indians live in villages.

    This pack focuses on the Tibetan Children’s Village School in Northern India. There are 28 colour photos and an extensive set of sheets with background information and activities. 19. Neighbours: The Life and Times of Yesudas Keknel,Anand Gram, North India

    A video pack providing a case study of a young boy. Includes information cards, booklet and maps. The pack aims to show the way of life in a suburban settlement in India to show the similarities and differences between Anand Gram and the pupil’s local area and to show how a community has worked together to overcome poverty. About the life of a young boy and family in Delhi, it compares British and Indian cultures. It features community life, schools, public events and local industry. 20. Savituri: Pillayantha, Tamil Nadu, South India

    A 15 minute video with teachers’ booklet telling the story of 12 year old Savithri and her friends who are making changes to their lives. Although focusing on a poor rural community, the children in the video show how they are taking charge of their own lives. by Christian Aid. 21. Bangalore - Indian City Life A Locality Case Study

    A comprehensive (24-page) set of notes about Castries, St Lucia, which accompany the BBC Radio Series. Background notes, activities and some resources (maps, photos, recipes, statistics, etc) are included for each programme, £3.00.

    b. Key Stages 1 and 2. Primary Geographer: No 9 St Lucia Issue

    Contained within a plastic folder, 20 A4 laminated photographs and a 32 page pupils’ book are included in this pack. The pupils’ book includes background information, maps and data, as well as evocative photographs depicting life in Jamaica. Pupils are encouraged to view the case studies and compare and contrast with their own local areas, £9.95 (IPC 123957). 28. The Caribbean- Trinidad and Dominica BBC Landmarks Unit 3 Geography

Five programmes investigating, an overview of the Caribbean islands as a whole and the islands of Trinidad and Dominica in particular. Modern urban life and more traditional rural ways of life are compared. Photopack and teachers notes also available from BBC Education.
