What's in the News?
Recognise selected physical and human processes and appreciate how these can change the character of places and environments studied; identify and explain different views held by people about an environmental change; recognise and describe how people can improve or damage the environment in particular cases; use a range of skills and sources to undertake independent or teacher-planned investigations; identify the points of reference specified on maps A, B and C in the national curriculum.

Newspaper Report ICT Link Unit 4A
Write a news report about a local issue,
e.g. a new housing estate, closing down of a corner shop.
Ask them to publish it using word-processing or desktop
publishing software. The children could also create posters
about the issue to display around the school, to which
other children can respond.

Divide the children into small groups and ask each group
to develop a radio news report about a local issue
considering different arguments by interviewing each other
in different roles. A group of children could take on the role of a film crew and film the reports for a class/school news report.

Weather Forecasting
Use regional, national or international television weather
forecasts to develop the children’s understanding of where
they are on the weather map. Develop the children’s
understanding of weather symbols by using the IWB software to ‘present’ a TV style weather forecast.

Making the News (MTN) is a free online multimedia publishing system for your school hosted by the National Education Network. Staff can upload and publish stories directly; pupils compose and upload stories for staff approval - and staff make the decision to publish. Staff administrators log in using their preferred email address and a password. |

This 4learning site offers information for the children, worksheets for the teacher to download, an image bank for each of the units, weblinks connected to the unit visited and onscreen activities to be done at home, by the children, to support the learning in school.
