Recreational uses of rivers

People use rivers for many different purposes, not just for transporting goods and supplying water. Rivers have a recreational or fun aspect to them. It is important to remember that rivers are dangerous and you should be careful around them.

People use rivers for boating and pleasure cruises. Boating holidays on the Norfolk Broads and other rivers are popular in England. There are also cruises along the River Nile and the River Rhine.

Fishing is the world's most popular sport. Many rivers have a good supply of trout, salmon and carp. Fishing is enjoyed by 3 million people in Britain, 23 million people in Japan and 66 million people in the USA.

Rivers are also good tourist attractions. Many of the world's major rivers have spectacular waterfalls and gorges. Examples include the Niagara Falls, the Victoria Falls and the Grand Canyon.
