Floods in Asia

Date
The floods occurred in Asia in September 2002.

Location
The flooding occurred in southeast Asia along the Mekong river. Cambodia, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam have all experienced flooding. The worst flooding has been in the Mekong delta.

Causes
The main cause of the flood was unseasonably early and heavy monsoon rains. The River Mekong has risen so high that it is one of the worst floods in 40 years. The dry season is not due to begin until November so there is still danger of more flooding in these countries.Main effects

Many people have been evacuated from their homes in the Mekong delta.

People are camping on the delta which may burst at any moment.

177 people are dead although the death toll is expected to be higher.

The Mekong delta has been turned into an inland sea because so much of the land has been flooded.

Roads have been cut off or destroyed.

Lots of the rice harvest has been destroyed. It is under water and is damaged. This will cause a food shortage in the future. Half a million hectares of rice fields have been damaged in Thailand.

Dams in Thailand are in danger of bursting.

Irrigation channels have been totally destroyed.

Cemeteries have been flooded.
