WORKSHEET 41 : Project - The relationship between how fast a river travels and depth of the river. Read through the sheet below. It tells you what you need to write in your project. 1) Introduction This should say what river you studied, when you went on your river visit and where this river is found. It should also say what you are trying to find out. 2) Method List all the equipment you used for the time experiment. Also write a detailed explanation of how you carried out the time experiment. List all the equipment you used for the depth experiment. Also write a detailed explanation of how you carried out the depth experiment. List all the equipment you used for the width experiment. Also write a detailed explanation of how you carried out the width experiment. 3) Results Copy out your tables neatly. Using graph paper construct a cross sectional diagram of your river. See the picture below:
Above is an example of a cross-sectional area diagram. Follow these instructions to draw your own.
a) Find the width of the river at Site Three. Use one large square (these are the bolder lines on the graph paper above) to represent 1 metre of river width. So if the river is 4 and a half metres across, you need to use 4 large squares plus half a large square. Draw a horizontal line (______) on the graph paper to show the width of the river at Site Three. Mark on the width. b) Label the left bank (left side of the horizontal line) and the right bank (right side of the horizontal line). c) Find the depth of the river at the left bank. Use one medium square to represent 10cm of river depth. So if the river is 40cm deep, you need to use 4 medium squares. Draw a vertical line ( | ) from the left bank down 4 squares. One small square = 2cm of river depth. d) Repeat at the right bank and midstream. e) Now join up these lines using a ruler. f) Colour inside the lines blue (as above). g) Now repeat these instructions for Site Four.
Now answer these questions writing full sentences. Write your answers in a paragraph with the sub-heading Site One: At Site Three, what was the depth at the left bank? At Site Three, what was the depth at the right bank? At Site Three, what was the depth in midstream? At Site Three, what was the average time for the cork to travel 2 metres at the left bank? At Site Three, what was the average time for the the cork to travel 2 metres at the right bank? At Site Three, what was the average time for the cork to travel 2 metres in midstream? At Site Three where did the water flow the fastest? At Site Three where did the water flow the slowest? At Site Three where was the water the shallowest? At Site Three where was the water the deepest?
Now answer these questions writing full sentences. Write your answers in a paragraph with the sub-heading Site Two: At Site Four, what was the depth at the left bank? At Site Four, what was the depth at the right bank? At Site Four, what was the depth in midstream? At Site Four, what was the average time for the cork to travel 2 metres at the left bank? At Site Four, what was the average time for the cork to travel 2 metres at the right bank? At Site Four, what was the average time for the cork to travel 2 metres in midstream? At Site Four where did the water flow the fastest? At Site Four where did the water flow the slowest? At Site Four where was the water the shallowest? At Site Four where was the water the deepest?
4) Conclusions Answer these questions using full sentences. Write your answers in a paragraph: For Site Three where was the water flowing the fastest and what was the depth of the water? For Site Three where was the water flowing the slowest and what was the depth of the water? For Site Four where was the water flowing the fastest and what was the depth of the water? For Site Four where was the water flowing the slowest and what was the depth of the water? Generally for which site did the river travel the fastest and was the water generally deep or shallow? Generally for which site did the river travel the slowest and was the water generally deep or shallow? Now copy and complete these paragraphs: The river generally travelled the fastest at Site ______ where the water depth was _____________. This is because there was less water to move. The river travelled the fastest at the ________ _______ at this site. The river generally travelled the slowest at Site _______ where the water depth was ___________. This is because there was more water to move. The river travelled the fastest at the __________ _________ at this site. Where river travels the fastest, the water depth is ____________. Where rivers travel the slowest, the water depth is ____________________. |
