Data handling software, such as spreadsheets and databases, help pupils to access complicated data in a methodical way, and demonstrate patterns and trends.

Using pre-prepared census data pupils can be encouraged to query the database to develop high level historical research and ICT skills. The ability to sort, categorise, manipulate data within a touch of a button allows complex tasks to be completed by students of all abilities.

This project shows how 19th century census data has been used by pupils to fulfil the Integrated Task requirement of QCA ICT Unit 5B. The work is linked to History Unit 12: Change in our locality in Victorian times.

Examples of database which pupils can create include databases on the wives of Henry VIII and Famous people.
