The Monster E-mail Project - 4

Evaluation
We found many links to Literacy, especially speaking and listening, asking questions and thinking of descriptive words. The shapes of the monsters involved the children in thinking mathematically, and drew on their knowledge of the language of shapes. As the children designed and drew their monsters there was a link to art and design.

I enjoyed using a wide range of teaching strategies which the children found interesting. There were also different strategies planned for the children, including class, group, and paired and individual opportunities to learn. The children made good use of the skills sheets prepared. They achieved more using these.

It was a very adult led project. Despite the fact the children and adults involved really enjoyed themselves, I do feel that the children could have benefited more if they had been older. To get the children to make their descriptions of their monsters required a lot of adult help.

The sessions involved a lot of speaking and listening which the children did really well. However, at times the adults asked too many questions as the children did not have the skills themselves to complete this part of the plan. This is another reason that I feel it would have been better with older children. The drawing of the monsters would have been more successful if they could have been done on the computer. At this point in time the children did not have these skills.

Next time, I will.

Do this project with older children and use one of the special websites to exchange information.
If completing the project with younger children, I would send the descriptions by e-mail but the drawn pictures by normal mail.
Perhaps I would use the idea of virtual teddies. Children could write stories for them and send them to our partners.
