Making Clicker grids - 2

Judith Adelsberg, St Crispin's Infant School, Westgate

Finding words that rhyme
Children find rhyming words on the grid, and write a simple sentence with them.

Children can listen to the words without writing them by clicking with the right mouse button, not the left. When they have chosen their matching pair, they write a sentence. Clicking the loud speaker at the end of the sentence sends a full stop to Clicker Writer, which will then read the whole sentence back to the child.

How to make this grid yourself

Create the grid using File > New Grid. Click 'Custom..' in the templates dialogue box

Select a 6 across by 2 down grid and change the background colour as you require.

Organise the grid to look the way you want by deleting cells that are not required. To delete a cell hold down the Ctrl key and click the left mouse button over the cell (or cells) required. Now go to the toolbar at the top of the screen and click Grid > Delete > Delete Cell.

If you need to insert a cell go to Grid > Insert > Insert Cell.

To reposition and resize cells on the grid, hold down the Alt key and click the cell with the left mouse button. Drag in the middle of the cell to move it. Drag at the bottom right hand corner of the cell to resize it.

Type the text you require into the cells by holding down the shift key and clicking the left mouse button over the cell.

To insert the loud speaker symbol in the final cell, hold down the shift key and click the cell with the right mouse button. Click the 'Graphic...' button to select your own graphic for the cell.

The loudspeaker symbol shown is found in the Icons folder and is called 'hearicon.bmp', but you can use any graphic you like.

Finishing the sentence.

When the loudspeaker is clicked, the cell sends a full stop to finish the sentence for the children. This will make Clicker Writer speak the sentence back to the children. The cell should also start a new line ready for the next sentence.

To do this, hold down the shift key and click the cell with the right mouse button. The Cell Properties dialogue box appears. Click the 'Send' tab.

Click in the 'Send text' button and in the long white box type a full stop.

Click to put a tick in the 'Add Return' box. This will force a new line to begin at the end of every sentence.

Save your grid when finished.
