How to create a newspaper page using MS Publisher

Sandra Patrick, NGfL Advisory Teacher

This sheet explains briefly how to use the Publisher Wizard with a selected template. By entering their own text and pictures and deleting unwanted frames, pupils may readily create a personalised, professional-looking newspaper.

Open Publisher and select Publications by Wizard, then Newsletters. Select one of the templates then click Start Wizard.

  • Click Next to continue using the wizard, or Finish to carry on working unaided.

A useful feature of Publisher is the option to zoom:

At 33%, the whole page may be seen. This enables the children to arrange the layout of their page. To write on the page, click on the plus sign and zoom to 75 - 100%. Click in a frame - the sample text will disappear as soon as you start to type.

To make changes, click anywhere inside a frame to select it (you'll see small black 'handles'). Press Delete to remove the frame. Drag the handles to resize. Drag in the corner of the frame to move - wait for the van! Hold down Ctrl and press A (Ctrl-A) to select all the text in the frame. You may then change the appearance by selecting a different font, size, etc.
