Noun Rap

Overview

As part of their studies into Sound Insulation, Class 5 turned their classroom into a recording studio. Working in groups and as a whole class they produced their own ‘Noun Rap’ and video including performance, dance, storyboards and artwork for CD covers.

The Noun Rap

“Hey Dudes!

If parts of speech are just too much for you

Chill out!

Pin back your ears, we’ll tell you what to do…”

The rap itself came out of some Literacy lessons where pupils had experienced difficulties remembering parts of speech and examples of their use. The ‘Noun Rap’ provided a way of chanting grammar in a way that was less formal and more fun for the pupils in Class 5 to remember. Most if this was done under the pretext of rehearsing and performing the song.

Pupils found out about ‘Garage Band’ and mixed drums samples and guitar riffs together to make a backing track during Music lessons. They also learned how to use ‘iMovie’ to film and edit video clips. In Literacy children created their own instructional notes on how to use Garage Band and iMovie for other people to use. The class created storyboards to plan their own videos as well. Some of these will include animation. Another member of staff worked with children to help them choreograph their dance moves. The performance was filmed in the school hall and classroom during PE and Literacy lessons.

In Science Class 5 investigated sound insulation and learned how some materials are more effective in muffling sound. Children measured sound levels around the school (including the staff room!) using ‘LOGit Explore’. The class thought about how they could turn the classroom into a recording studio and designed their own floor plan. They used evidence from their test results to choose the most practical sound insulators for doors and windows. The Noun Rap was recorded and mixed in the classroom. The children are designing and making sound muffling curtains in Design Technology to improve future recording. In Art the class designed their own CD covers to present their Noun Rap to their parents for Christmas.
