Ros Wilson Writing Levels

James has put all the Ros Wilson writing levels in a handy Excel tool.

Ros Wilson Writing Levels (Right click on the link and select 'Save Target As')

How to use the Excel document

If you need to level a piece of writing you can work down the Excel list (as you would with the existing printed version).

If a student satisfies a specific learning objective, put a '1' in the tick column (c). This makes that line turn light grey (as it has been achieved).

If the student hasn't achieved the objective, you put a zero in the tick column (c) - and the row is highlighted (making it easier to
focus in on the objectives that remain outstanding).

If you leave a hyphen ' - ' in column c,  the row will stay the same.

The Excel chart totals the '1's and tells you what the true writing level is (i.e. 3c, 2a etc) based on the Ros Wilson marking scheme.

If you want you can sort the page as well - so that only highlighted objectives 'to be achieved' can been seen - making it easier still to focus on next steps. To do this click on the arrow button at the top of column C and highlight '1'. To reverse this, highlight 'Show All'.

The rows are numbered which makes it easier to compare different students in a writing group.

The best thing is that all of the levels are combined in the one Excel file. If you look on the bottom of the page - there is a tab for each level (so we don't have to photocopy loads of pages in advance). It also means that you can 'try out' a student on a higher (or lower) level and save it for next time.

I save a copy of the file against each pupil name in my class. If all teachers use the Excel files they can be passed on to the next
teacher to use in subsequent years.
