To create your own square, click Table on the Word
menu bar.

Click Insert Table... Enter the number of
rows and columns.
To see how well your table fits the printed page,
change to Whole Page in the Zoom tool:
You may change the number of rows and columns by
highlighting a row or column and using the Delete Cells command in the
Table menu. In this way, 2 x 2 or 3 x 3 squares and so on can be created.
The squares and their contents may easily be adapted
within MS Word. Simply click within a box to edit the contents.
You may highlight individual boxes for particular
emphasis by filling them with colour. You will need to display the Tables
and Borders toolbar: click View then point to Toolbars. Click Tables
and Borders. To colour a box, click within it, then click the the Shading
Colour tool on the Tables and Borders toolbar.
For example, you may wish to show patterns
within the square, such as the pattern made by multiples of 9:
On a network, individual children may load number
square files onto their own work stations. They may explore the possibilities
for themselves, making their own versions of the squares. This will
develop ICT skills, and give pupils the opportunity to apply their knowledge
and understanding of sequences and patterns in Numeracy.
