Spreadsheets in teaching Mathematics at KS2;

Lesson Plans.

The activities have been taught to Years 4, 5 and 6. They are structured along the lines of the three-part lesson (revision/oral, main activity, plenary) and contain suggestions for support and challenge.

Note: ICT and whole class teaching
A data projector is strongly recommended. As Susan Connor points out in her evaluation, it enables very easy recapping of the task itself and key points of previous lessons. If you do not have access to a data projector, a large monitor will suffice. Failing that, set up an overhead projector next to the class computer. Have ready a transparency showing the blank spreadsheet grid. Be prepared to write whatever is entered into the computer onto this grid.

Number grids
This introductory lesson does not require computers. Children identify patterns on a 2D grid and generate their own grids.

Introduction to spreadsheets (1)
Cell references are introduced. Pupils are taught how to enter a formula to add or subtract two values

Introduction to spreadsheets (2)
Pupils construct formulas with two operations. They are shown how to copy to another cell.

Using spreadsheets to solve problems
Pupils analyse the maths in a verbal 'problem', then build the formula.

Multiplication tables
Pupils carry out repeated addition to generate patterns of multiples.

Function machines
Pupils recap what they have learned about formulas in making a simple function machine.

Finding the mean
The class learn how to find the mean (average) and median of a set of values. They are taught how to enter a formula to calculate the mean. Brackets are introduced.

Applying spreadsheets in handling data (1)
In this practical lesson, children agree personal measurements, then collect and record data prior to entering on a spreadsheet.

Handling data (2)
Measurements are entered on the sheet. The average of a range of values is calculated.

Handling data (3)
Children suggest connections in the data and use the sheets to look for evidence to support their hypotheses.

Real life problems: money
Money: using a spreadsheet to work out a cash balance.
