Below average: The pair decided to change the appearance of their text, but only because everyone else had.

At this stage, there simply isn't enough evidence to reliably 'level' the outcomes. However, a clear distinction emerges. The pupils at the upper end are beginning to identify reasons for amending their work and are making appropriate changes. The teacher now knows that this is an area that needs to be worked on. What changes can we make to our pages, and why might we want to make these changes?

Lesson 3

Below average: This child only made one attempt. Wanted "big writing and picture". Picture and WordArt were shooting around all over the page. The pupil simply chose favourite colour, with no thought to presentation of work.

In this group, the pupils use ICT to "generate, amend and record their work and share their ideas in different forms" - Level 2. They are not yet showing signs that they can "develop, organise and present" their work - Level 3. This is an area that now needs to be worked on. The display of children's work will be helpful, as the teacher can now draw attention to the different ways in which the class have presented their pages, and talk about the reasons for choices.

Average: This pair were not satisfied with the first attempt. "This is like stairs - what can we do?"

At the second attempt, the pupils were able to align work with assistance.

The evidence suggests progress towards Level 3. The pupils ask for help to improve their work. They need more opportunities to work with text and graphics, so that they can do this independently.

Above average: After the first attempt, the pupils ask, "Can we do this in Indian sort of writing?"

The second version shows the choice of font, and better size for others to read.

The pupils are showing evidence of Level 3 attainment. They want to make their work look authentic, and are aware of the need for better presentation. However, a wider range of evidence from other areas of ICT work must be considered before a conclusive Level 3 can be given. The pupils need more opportunities for independent work, to consolidate the skills and techniques they have learned.
