Note on Search Engines

Pupils may use Yahooligans in safety. A single keyword such as Hinduism will produce a reasonable list of relevant sites. Densely-packed text is a problem on many sites, but older pupils should be able to skim for key facts.

Web-wide searching is made difficult by the enormous quantity and diversity of sites. For older pupils seeking background information, Britannica is a better starting point. It suggests relevant sites with ratings, and pupils may e-mail an article to their collaborators in a research project.

If you wish to use a general search engine such as Google, searches must be highly specific and focused. Children must be closely supervised - searches should always be tested first.

A single keyword can return tens of thousands of matches, most of which are irrelevant. It is generally better to determine a phrase containing the keyword. Surround with quotes, so that the complete phrase is searched for. These examples worked well:

"make a Christingle"
"build a sukkah"
"Islam for children"
"Rangoli patterns"
