Using a database in a friction investigation
Alison Richardson, Cliftonville Primary School

Introduction

This project was designed to draw together the QCA documents for Science and ICT in Year 4.

Science
Unit 4E requires children to investigate objects sliding over different surfaces.

ICT
Unit 4D requires children to collect and represent data using a data handling package.

What we did
We designed an experiment to test different surfaces for friction using a ramp and a toy brick.

We used Information Workshop to produce a very simple database to record the results. We wanted to use graphs to answer our questions, so we produced a number of different graphs on the computer and decided which one contained the information we needed.
