Opportunities for ICT in Science

Sandra Patrick, NGfL Advisory Teacher
Year 1: Growing Plants
ICT focus Using a word bank
Main activity Label parts of a plant
Suggested resources My World, Clicker 4

In My World, select Science and then Plant. Here it is possible to click on the 'plant bits' and drag parts of a flowering plant on to the screen. Click on words to drag labels to the correct parts. Use the rotate tool to make the parts fit together.

This activity might be especially useful for recording or assessment. Children who have difficulty drawing will find it satisfying to have a good drawing of a plant clearly labelled to put into their Science folder.

My World Science also has some useful screens on life cycles where children can place the pictures in the correct order to show the life cycle of a frog, butterfly or bean.

Clicker 4
Clicker Grids for Learning has a series of linked grids showing the functions of the parts of a flowering plant. All grids in CGfL may be freely downloaded. Clicker4 is required.
